Powerful performance by welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz as he landed 45.1% of his power on his way to a 7th round stoppage of Maurice Hooker. 63 of Ortiz's 143 landed punches were body shots.

Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas - In the biggest fight of his career to date, rising welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz (17-0, 17 KOs) had a very tough test, but he dropped and stopped former world champion Maurice “Mighty Mo” Hooker (27-2-3, 19 KOs) in the seventh round.

They started jabbing, with Ortiz pressing forward with big shots in the first round. Hooker was trying to keep Ortiz back with a jab, and Ortiz was moving right past it to throw hard shots. Both boxers were connecting, but it was Ortiz landing the harder punches.

A lot of punches at close range by both men in the second. Hooker was starting to get a better groove with his jab, with Ortiz still pushing the pace with the bigger shots thrown and connecting. A lot of action in the third. Hook was taking Ortiz's punches well and landing plenty of shots of his own when necessary.

A battle of jabs at the start of the fourth. Hooker appeared to get the edge when he landed several solid counters. In the fifth, Hooker was getting braver and trading with Ortiz when close. Ortiz hurt Hooker to the body and began unloading on him with shots. Hooker covered up and managed to get out of danger.

In the sixth, a big shot to the body, followed by some head shots, sent Hooker down in the final minute. Ortiz went for the finish, with Hooker deciding to trade until the bell.

At the start of the seventh, Ortiz landed a big shot that may have landed on the elbow of Hooker - sending him down for the count.
