Vazquez Jr v. Oquendo Undercard Results From Puerto Rico

Jose ‘Chelo’ Gonzalez wasted no time in getting rid of late sub Oscar Cuero. A pair of body shot knockdowns brought an end to the bout in the very first round.

Cuero made the long trek from Colombia on very late notice, but never appeared to be in the fight other than by physical presence. Gonzalez took instant note of his opponent not being fight-ready, immediately targeting the body.

A left hook to the liver caused a delayed knockdown, with Cuero barely beating the count. Gonzalez was measured in the follow-up attack before scoring a right hand to the body for the second knockdown. Cuero rose to his feet but spit out his mouthpiece, prompting referee Roberto Ramirez Sr. to stop the contest.

The official time was 1:54 of round one.

Gonzalez improves to 21-0 (16KO) with the win and is being groomed for a future title shot against current lightweight titlist Ricky Burns. Cuero falls to 15-9 (12KO), suffering his second straight loss.

The career of Victor Bisbal continues at a snail’s pace, showing little progression since his run with the 2004 Puerto Rico Olympic boxing squad. The once-beaten heavyweight managed to extend his win streak to 16 straight with a 6th round injury stoppage over 38-year old Alex Gonzalez.

Bisbal was in control throughout the bout, though little action was offered in the battle of Boricua heavyweights. A big third round for Bisbal saw a series of head shots cause swelling and cuts around Gonzalez’ eyes. 

The facial damage grew worse in the sixth, when a Bisbal flurry busted open Gonzalez’ wounds. Time was called for the ringside official to survey the damage, at which point the bout was stopped.

The official time was 1:21 of round six.

Bisbal improves to 21-1 (14KO), having not lost in more than six years. Gonzalez falls to 20-8 (10KO), having now lost seven of his last nine contests.
