This past Saturday night junior welterweight contender Jessie Vargas (22-0) took another step towards a title shot with a strong performance against the previously unbeaten Wale "Lucky Boy" Omotoso (23-1).  Vargas picked up the unanimous decision victory in an entertaining fight the featured great two action. Vargas was very pleased to have put on a some a crowd pleasing performance.

"I had a good night Saturday night. We had a lot of positive feedback. I am very thankful for the fans. I am happy with my performance but there is always room for improvement. We just have to go back in the gym and correct our mistakes," stated Vargas.

Omotoso made the 147 pound weight limit on Friday but rehydrated to a whopping 164 pounds on fight night and had a 10 to 11 pound weight advantage over Vargas when they were in the ring. Vargas said that he knew Omotoso was a strong fighter but that he didn't notice the weight difference.

"Not really to tell you the truth. He is naturally strong and we knew that going into the fight. I pushed back when I had to. I knew he was feeling it when I was cracking him in the beginning. In the beginning we were both trying to show each other that we had the strength to stop each other. He was doing it and I was doing the same," Vargas told BoxingScene.com.

Vargas suffered a knockdown in the 2nd round when he hit the canvas but he feels that he went down because he was off balance and not from a punch that hit him.

"When I went down in the 2nd it wasn't a punch and I know it. I just over threw my right hand and he came in when I threw it so I just went over his head and he kinda grazed me and he just barely touched my shoulder.  Somehow since I threw it with all my power I was off balance and we crashed also. I was out of balance and they counted it as a knocked down and I wasn't going to argue with the ref so I just got up to show Wale I wasn't hurt," Vargas explained.

The Las Vegas resident said that he is hoping to return to the ring soon and plans on putting similar performances in his upcoming fights.

"I had fun in the fight and the fans were entertained so I was happy with Saturday night. Believe it or not I really enjoyed myself in the fight.  I am happy because it looks like everyone who turned into HBO enjoyed my fight," said Vargas.
