Samuel Vargas’ seventh-round technical knockout loss to Danny Garcia this past Saturday wasn’t the first time he’d been stopped — there had also been a four-round TKO loss to Errol Spence in April 2015.

He said it was the timing of Garcia’s shots, which landed well and added up.

“I got beat up in there,” Vargas said afterward. “It just wasn’t my night.”

Garcia’s blows landed flush, dropping Vargas in the second and wobbling him. They countered faster than Vargas could throw, landing with enough force to break Vargas down, but they didn’t land with more force than Vargas had felt in previous outings.

“I’ve been hit harder before, but it was just the accumulation of punches that got to me,” Vargas said. “I thought he'd be a heavier hitter. He punches great in-between.”
