SAN ANTONIO — Mexico's Saul Alvarez unified the super welterweight titles by unanimously outpointing American southpaw Austin Trout over 12 rounds on Saturday at the Alamodome. Alvarez (42-0-1) successfully defended his WBC title and won the WBA and Ring Magazine super welterweight championships, receiving winning scores of 115-112, 116-111 and 118-109. Alvarez's brother, Rigoberto, lost the WBA title to Trout in February 2011 in the family's hometown of Guadalajara.

Alvarez knocked down Trout (26-1) once and staggered him several times to the delight of the crowd of 39,247 that continually chanted "Mexico! Mexico!"

"He was better than me," Trout said. "I have no excuses. He was quicker, stronger, he was the better man. I accept my defeat humbly and promise I'll be back. I promise I'll go back to the drawing board and come back stronger. He caught me with a good shot. I wasn't sleeping on him. I was prepared for this fight, but the better man won. He was a good fighter. He boxed a lot better than I tought. He moved a lot better than I thought. Not that I underestimated him, but he was a totally different fighter."
