Tony Dodson suffered a broken hand in his last fight.

The Liverpool light heavyweight, who is a former British super middleweight champion, was handed the decision against Richard Horton at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday.

But despite getting the win, the 59-56 points victory came at a cost for the likeable 35-year-old.

Dodson (32-8-1, 15 KOs) dropped the Harlow man (9-6, 1 KO) on the way to impressing as part of the undercard to David Haye’s stunning one-round knockout victory over vastly overmatched Australian Mark de Mori.

And he confirmed that, as well as suffering two cuts which required 16 stitches post-fight, he now will have to have his right hand strapped up for the foreseeable future after breaking his hand in the aftermath of knocking down his 34-year-old opponent in the second round of a scheduled six.

“I’m in the hospital now, peeps, and [I] can confirm that I did break my hand in round two, so that’s boxing for you,” he tweeted.

He also told Boxing Scene: “I think I’ve more than earned the title [of ring moniker ‘Warrior’]. It wasn’t a great performance, but taking into consideration that I broke my hand in the second [round], plus the cuts, to come out with a win is a bonus and it’s onto the next one now.”

His manager, Stephen Vaughan, hailed the performance of the man who was previously in action last May, saying: “He boxed well and most importantly got the win, but he will be out of action for a while after the cuts he suffered.

“Tony will need to get his hand checked, too, after suffering a broken hand, but he has been promised a slot on David Haye’s next undercard.

“Providing everything goes well with the cuts and, fingers crossed, his hand heals quickly, I can see him in a title fight at light heavyweight before too long.”
