Steve Maylett reckons Terry Flanagan could be set for a career best performance against Petr Petrov this weekend.

Flanagan tops a bumper bill which is live on BT Sport 1 at 8.30pm this Saturday (April 8). The fight is also available to watch on BTSport.com and via the award-winning BT Sport App.

And Maylett, who has coached Flanagan since his amateur days, says the WBO world lightweight champion has added a new punch to his arsenal ahead of the contest.

“We’re always looking to learn new moves and some of them stick,” added Maylett. “He’s recently added a new uppercut so the bad news for every other lightweight in the world is he’s only going to get better.

“Physically he is in his prime right now.”

Flanagan (32-0) holds the longest unbeaten run in British boxing and will be keen to put on a show in front of his home fans to build his momentum ahead of possible unification fights or a move up in weight this autumn.

“Because of his size and engine, Terry’s other qualities tend to get overlooked but he’s got a lot talent” explained Maylett.

“For some reason, he doesn’t always look easy on the eye on fight night. Sometimes he switches off if it’s getting easy but top champions who spar with him in the gym all sing his praises. Petrov will really test him and that will bring out his best, you’ll see.

“He’s got incredibly fast hands which the commentators seldom pick up on. That’ll serve him well if and when he moves up in weight. He’s at his best when he’s counter punching off the front foot because it stops opponents coming forward."

Flanagan v Petrov tops the bill of a huge card from the Manchester Arena.

The show also sees domestic rivals Liam Smith and Liam Williams clash for the interim WBO world super welterweight title, while double Olympic champion Nicola Adams and the highly-rated Daniel Dubois make their professional debuts.
