Cruiserweight champion Guillermo Jones (39-3-2, 31KOs) will have to wait before getting a fight with former WBO world heavyweight champion Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs (58-6-1, 51 KOs).
This past Friday night in Panama City, Jones confronted Briggs in ring, following the former champ's first round knockout of Hungarian journeyman Zoltan Petranyi (51-22-1, 16 KOs) at the Hotel Sortis.
Jones has been inactive since testing positive for a banned substance before an early 2014 rematch with Denis Lebedev. He was suspended afterwards and then legally appealed that decision. He claims a deal has been reached to lift that suspension and he plans to compete as a heavyweight upon his ring return.
Briggs is willing to face him, but only after getting a shot at unified champion Wladimir Klitschko. Briggs has been chasing a fight with Klitschko since late 2013. Klitschko defends his titles against Bryant Jennings next month.
"Right now I want to face Klitschko. I've invested a lot of time to make this happen, but after that fight [if he wants it we can fight] right here in Panama," Briggs said.
