As the new year dawns, Orlando Salido - who battled Francisco Vargas to a draw on June 4th in what is considered by many to be the best fight of 2016 - isn't doing all that much.

According to his adviser, Sean Gibbons the rugged Mexican warrior is, "just collecting awards, him and Vargas." But when asked what they have in mind for 2017, he told BoxingScene.com,"Salido is just committed to giving the fight fans the fights they want."

And it looks like they are moving away from a potential rematch with current WBO 130-pound titlist, Vasyl Lomachenko (who Salido defeated in controversial fashion in March of 2013).

"We spoke a lot about it, we discussed it, we had a lot of talks about it,'' said Gibbons. "But the more people you spoke to and the more people out there and the media, the public has spoken. What fight they want to to see? Salido-Vargas again. So that's kind of the way we're leaning now."

Vargas, who has the WBC super featherweight belt, is scheduled to fight on January 28th. As is Takashi Miura, who Salido was scheduled to face on December 17th at the Forum in Inglewood, California, before pulling out of the fight with a back injury.

"There's four guys fighting on the 28th, there's Vargas-(Miguel) Berchelt, there's (Mikey) Roman-Miura, there's no guarantee that any of those guys don't get upset," said Gibbons, of this doubleheader that will be televised on HBO. "Mikey Roman is a dead-game, rugged, in-your-face solid chin dude. So there's no guarantee what happens there. So there's no guarantee in the Vargas-Berchelt fight. So there there's a lot of different avenues for Orlando in 2017, right now."

There is talk that the winners of this card in late January will then square off. Regardless, Gibbons believes that Salido will be in the mix for a significant fight or some sort in the upcoming year.

"So what I think what Orland wants to do is wait a minute, sit back and see what happens January 28th and then review all his options that are out there,"Gibbons stated.
