EBU super lightweight champion Ruben Nieto (18-1) retained the title last night in Leganes on a Rimer Boxe promotion in an all Spanish matchup against Nicolas Gonzales (18-1) in what ringsiders describe as a terrific fight.

Nieto looked a beaten man in the sixth when he was floored and hurt but got up and in the seventh he came back and hurt Gonzales and the referee called it off. Gonzales was knocked down in the third in a fight that went back and forth.

This was a voluntary defence by the champion who next will defend the title in the UK against Lenny Daws.

On the undercard heavyweight Gabriel Enguema (7-2) stopped Gheorghe Danut (9-21-7) in the fourth. Danut campaigned at middleweight when last heard of and that was back in 2010.

Reigning EU super middleweight champion Mariano Hilario (15-5) outscored Romeo Paun (4-17) in a non-title six-rounder that was scored 60-53 on all cards.

Light heavyweight Adasat Rodrigiuez (13-5-2) knocked out Sergio Arenas (5-1) with a bodyshot in the first.
