Ricky Burns retained his WBO lightweight title after Jose Gonzalez stayed on his stool at the end of the ninth round in a dramatic night at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow. The 29-year-old mandatory challenger from Puerto Rico went into the bout unbeaten in 22 fights with 17 of them won inside the distance but an injury - the early suggestion being it was a broken wrist - scuppered his chances of an upset.

Burns survived a seventh round in which he took some punishment and although he came back after that he was behind on points when the fight came to an early finish.

Of the seventh round, Burns told Sky Sports: "He caught me with a good few shots but I proved I can take a good shot. He hurt me in that round. I just decided to stand my ground and trade back well."

Gonzalez shook his head at the start of the 10th round to indicate he would not be coming out.

Burns said: "I felt as if he was getting tired. I knew the rounds were close. The judges had me behind. I couldn't believe how awkward he is. I take my hat off to him, he is a class, class opponent. He's very hard to hit. We knew he was a very big hitter. We knew he was going to be a bit tricky, his arms were just so long.''
