BoxingScene.com caught up to Richard Abril (17-3-1, 8KOs) and his trainer Osmiri Fernandez shortly after his controversial twelve round split decision loss to Brandon Rios (30-0, 22KOs) at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Fernandez advised BoxingScene that he spoke to officials from the WBA and Abril will retain his WBA interm-lightweight title even with the loss. Rios was ineligle to win the title when he weighed in 2-pounds over the weight limit.

"I talked to the WBA and they told me that Richard will remain the interm-champion," Fernandez told BoxingScene.

I also asked Fernandez who he would like to see Abril face if their efforts to secure a rematch are unsuccessful.

"We would like to unify titles.  We would like to fight someone like Antonio DeMarco. We also wouldn't mind fighting (Mercito) Gesta who fought on this card," Fernandez revealed.
