Kompayak Por Pramuk stopped Jean Pierro Perez in the sixth round in Thailand this afternoon to become the WBA Interim Flyweight Champion, making him the only Thai boxer to currently hold a world title.

The Venezuelan had a significant height and reach advantage and used it to good effect in the opening round, circling away from Kompayak and picking him off from the outside as the Thai pressed forwards looking to bang away to the body of Perez.

In round two Kompayak's policy of throwing almost nothing but power shots paid off as he landed two hard right hands which seemed to wobble Perez who initially looked to hold but recovered well. At the start of the third round the Venezuelan was landing some crisp combinations and using his footwork to good effect but Kompayak stunned him with another right hand and with Perez trapped against the ropes he moved in for the kill with a barrage of big shots.

Perez was probably saved by the bell but he recovered sufficiently to put in a much more composed performance in the fourth round as he circled away from Kompayak and started to use his reach to good effect, finding a home for the right uppercut and successfully eluding Kompayak who, undeterred, kept continuously moving forwards.

Perez was wobbled by another right hand early in the fifth and his footwork deserted him with Kompayak able to trap him against the ropes and fire away to the body and head. Unable to move away the Venezualan was forced to stand and trade and did manage to land some combinations of his own but would have been grateful to hear the bell.

In round six it quickly became clear that Perez hadn't recovered and without his footwork and lateral movement he was helpless to prevent Kompayak from driving forwards and piling on the pressure. With Perez trapped against the ropes and Kompayak firing away with a barrage of unanswered punches the referee decided to step in and save the Venezualan from further punishment.

With Friday's win, Porpramook (50-4, 35KO) is now in line to face Juan Carlos Reveco for a chance to win a title in a second weight class.

Perez falls to 20-6-1 (14KO), having now lost three of his last five. The other losses among that streak have also come against top flyweights and also on the road. Perez was stopped in two rounds by Reveco in their June '11 interim flyweight title fight in Argentina and came up just short against unbeaten Milan Melindo last September in the Philippines.

Highlighting the undercard was the surprise return of former two-time lineal flyweight king Pongsaklek Wonjongkam. The future Hall of Famer announced his retirement following a shocking knockout loss to sub .500 journeyman Rey Megrino last November, but resurfaced on Friday's show.

The legendary Thai's appearance was typical of his stay-busy pattern, scoring a 1st round knockout against countryman Nimroj Daniel, who was reportedly making his pro debut.

Wonjongkam (88-5-2, 47KO) suffered two surprise losses in 2012, relinquishing his flyweight crown in a 6th round knockout at the hands of Sonny Boy Jaro in the year's biggest upset, followed by the aforementioned defeat to Megrino.

What exactly is in store for the 35-year old southpaw remains to be seen.

Both bouts aired live on Thailand Channel 7.
