If you find yourself inside of the Mayweather Boxing Club any time after 4 PM these days, you will be in the midst of one of the liveliest camps around, as unbeaten superstar Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been preparing for his May 5th bout with Miguel Cotto as a sea of supporters and gym mates watch on.

And every day, hours before Mayweather hits the building, so too has Jessie Vargas been working rigorously inside of the gym as his own May 5th assignment looms. The unbeaten Vargas, who officially moved up to the welterweight division earlier this year, is promoted by Mayweather Promotions and will be battling with former title challenger Alfonso Gomez on the pay-per-view undercard portion of the Mayweather-Cotto bout.

Still just 22 years old, Vargas is at a point in his career where the fights are becoming more meaningful and the opponents are getting tougher. Gomez seems to be an ideal foe at this stage of Vargas’ career and it’s the type of fight that will tell us where each man stands.

I caught up with Vargas earlier this week after he was finishing up some brisk sparring and was able to capture the rest of his workout. No longer having to strain his body to make 140 pounds, Vargas seems a bit more at ease in the welterweight ranks and is leaving no room for error with his next fight just a few weeks away.
