Pablo Munguia scored a minor upset with a shockingly dominant decision win over Edgar Ortega in their 10-round welterweight battle Friday evening in Mexico City.

Scores were 98-90 (twice) and 95-93 in favor of Munguia, who never stopped pressing the action in an ugly, yet entertaining brawl devoid of style.

Ortega came in riding the biggest win of his young career, a majority decision over previously unbeaten Daniel Rosario in August. What worked so well on that night didn't deliver the same success here, as Ortega failed to make use of his height and reach advantage.

Instead, the young welterweight prospect attempted to make it a track meet, flicking his jab and offering lateral movement. The squat Munguia would have none of it, effectively cutting off the ring although his punches all came from wide angles.

The first true sign of a long evening for Ortega came in round three, when he suffered a cut outside of his right eye. The wound was never a factor in the bout, but seemed to shake his confidence a bit, while motivating Munguia to bring the pain.

A back-and-forth battle early on quickly developed into a schooling by Munguia, who walked through Ortega's flicking jab to land his power shots. A flurry towards the end of round seven had Ortega shook, and his night got worse after losing a point in round eight.

The deduction proved inconsequential as he was miserably behind on two cards, and never showed signs of turning things around. The end result was his first loss in more than two years, ending a 10-fight win streak as he falls to 15-2 (10KOs). His face bore a look of disgust when the official verdict was announced, but only has himself to blame for the outcome.

Munguia, aptly nicknamed 'Sepulturero' ('Gravedigger') lands another upset win in his remarkable journey. The 35-year old, who turned pro just six years ago at age 29, improves to 20-5 (11KOs).

The bout aired live on Telemundo.
