Nigerian great Nojim Maiyegun has died at the age of 83 in Vienna, Austria, The Punch reported.

Maiyegun won a bronze medal – the first Nigerian to medal in the Olympics – at light middleweight in the 1964 Tokyo Games. Along the way, he beat the United Kingdom’s William Robinson and Denmark’s Tom Bogs before losing to France’s Jo Gonzales.

Maiyegun then left Nigeria and settled in Austria, where he turned pro in 1971 and was moved fast. However, in 1973 he began to have problems with his eyesight, which, according to doctors, was caused by punches to the head. The Punch claimed that Maiyegun fought his last fight – a loss to Domenico Tiberia in December of 1973 – partially blind.

After the end of his fighting career, Maiygun worked street cleaning and janitorial jobs – occupations that were difficult for him due to his failing eyesight. He was declared fully blind in 2012.

Maiyegun’s professional record was 12-4.
