WBA 154-pound champion Miguel Cotto is in the best position of his entire career. The Puerto Rican star, who became a free agent last December when his contract expired with Top Rank, is being considered as a possible opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and for Manny Pacquiao on June 9th at the MGM Grand or the Thomas & Mack Center.
Two well known trainers in Puerto Rico spoke to Les Jiminez and advised Cotto to select Pacquiao, because Mayweather's style will present a much tough obstacle to overcome. Facing Pacquiao will also provide Cotto with the opportunity to avenge a 2009 TKO defeat.
Jose Sanchez, who trains Ivan Calderon and Orlando Pineiro, who trains and manages Juan Manuel Lopez, view Pacquiao as the easier task.
"If I were his manager, I'd tell him to look for the Pacquiao rematch," Pinero said.
"I think if Cotto is well trained, he can beat Pacquiao," said Sanchez.
