Michael Carbajal has an illustrious boxing career. It involved him winning six world championships, and a silver medal at the 1988 Olympic Games. He also is largely credited with securing improved pay for those in the flyweight division – he was the first junior flyweight to earn $1,000,000.

His achievements mean he will have a street named after him in Phoenix, Arizona just minutes from where he grew up.

The 56 year old, an inductee into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, received a unanimous vote from Phoenix City Council members on Wednesday afternoon. Members of the community, including his loved ones and fansm gave testimony to how much he has meant to them. They were heard.

The process, which has taken over a year, is over. The northeast corners of 9th and Fillmore will bear ceremonial signs reading “Michael Carbajal Way”. The street is on the corner of his gym – Michael Carbajal’s 9th St Boxing Gym.

The vote was unanimous in his favor – similarly to many of his fights as a professional.
