Former world champion Antonio Margarito is hoping to break his stint of inactivity.

The boxer has been inactive since August 2016, but his return is being targeted for September 2 in Chihuahua, Mexico and is likely to be a rematch against countryman Jorge 'Maromerito' Paez.

Margarito has not been in the ring since he beat Ramon 'Inocente' Alvarez - the older brother of Canelo Alvarez - by unanimous decision on August 13, 2016 at the Rosarito Convention Center in Baja California. Margarito used his experience and boxing ability to overcome Alvarez's awkward style.

Prior to the fight with Alvarez, the Tijuana Tornado was forced to get off the canvas after going down from a hard shot, but managed to secure the victory against Paez Jr.

The fight was Paez, which took place last March at the Arena Mexico City, was Margarito's first bout since December 2011, when he was stopped in a highly anticipated rematch with Puerto Rican rival Miguel Cotto at the Madison Square Garden in New York.

After his loss to Cotto, the Mexican slugger announced his retirement due to a serious eye injury that was suffered in 2010 at the hands of Manny Pacquiao. After going through a battery of medical tests, he announced his return to the ring in early 2016.

Margarito, 39 years old, has a record of 40-8 and 27 KOs.

In the event of his return to the ring, Paez will try to reverse the recent run of bad luck in his career. The boxer has lost four of his last six outings in the ring. 'Maromerito' has a record of 40-9-2 and 24 KOs.

"I just finished talking to Zanfer [Promotions], and I was just told that I have a tentative date of September 2, I'm told that 'Maromerito' wants a rematch and I have no problem with that. I want to fight and Chihuahua is being presented as a possibility," Margarito told ESPN Deportes.
