David Price has suffered another huge career setback after being stopped inside five rounds by American veteran Tony Thompson in front of his home fans at the Echo Arena, Liverpool. Thompson proved his second round knockout in their previous heavyweight fight five months ago was no fluke as he produced a flurry of unanswered punches to end the contest in round five. Such an outcome looked unlikely after Price had knocked down the 41-year-old in round two, however the Maryland boxer came storming back to silence the partisan home crowd.

Aftwards, Price's promoter Frank Maloney said it was time for Price to take a step back and move back down to the domestic level.

"We've dropped out of the Premier League and we have to drop down to domestic and European level. We are all in shock and we will have to sit down and talk about what we do next. If David wants to go on, I'll stay loyal. If he doesn't, I may call it a day," Maloney told BoxNation.
