Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas, NV - BoxingScene.com caught up with newly crowned 140 pound interim-WBC champion Lucas Matthysse shortly after his 10 round beat down of previously undefeated Olusegun Ajose. During fight week Matthysse revealed to BoxingScene that he was training to knock his opponent out. After losing two controversial decisions, Matthysse didn't want to leave his fate in the judges hands. He was ecstatic that his hard work paid off.

"We did exactly what we wanted. We got the knockout like we trained for. We didn't want to see what happened against Zab Judah and Devon Alexander. I wanted to get the knockout so it wouldn't be left to the judges," Matthysse stated.

The heavy handed Argentine focused on attacking his opponents body in the early rounds. He said that was by design because he wanted to take Ajose's legs away from him.

"We wanted to start hitting him to the body in the early rounds. He is a fighter who has a lot of movement so we had to stop that movement to slow him down and then to break him down later so that we could get the knockout," Matthysse told BoxingScene.

Matthysse said that he wasn't worried about being penalized when he hammered Ajose as the ref was breaking the action in the 10th. He said he started throwing his punch at the same time referee Russell Mora called for the break. He said that even prior to that punch landing he knew it was just a matter of time before he would stop Ajose.

"I wasn't worried about getting a point deducted or being disqualified because I threw the punch simultaneously when he stopped the action. I didn't do anything wrong," said Matthysse as he answered my question about if he felt that the fight may have gotten taken away from him at that point.

"We knew it would be a long fight and that is what we trained for. I could feel that I was breaking him down little by little and at the end I knew he was ready to go."
