Cosmopolitan, Las Vegas - In a light heavyweight showdown, Lionell Thompson (19-4, 11 KOs), 6-4 in his last ten fights, scored two knockdowns on his way to winning a ten round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten prospect Earl Newman (10-1-1, 7 KOs). The scores were 97-91, 97-91 and 96-92.

Thompson started slow in the first, but he started boxing much better to take control in the second.

During the third, Thompson rocked Newman and had him in serious trouble with a serious of hard shots. Referee Robert Byrd ruled a knockdown when Newman went flying into the corner and ropes prevented him from going down. He managed to survive the round.

In the fourth, Newman was rocked numerous times and dropped for a second time. But once again he managed to survive the round.

Newman did better in the fifth as he regained his legs during the break. During the sixth, Thompson managed to hurt Newman once again.

During the seventh round action, Thompson was still in full control and was landing the much harder shots. He appeared to shake Newman up with just about every punch that landed.

Newman had his best round in the eight, when he actually landed some very solid shots to the head and body. During the ninth, Newman continue to rally as Thompson took his foot off the gas and wasn't throwing as much. Newman even shook Thompson up and a solid overhand right.

In the tenth, Newman was pressing the action and trying to dig to the body while Thompson was mostly coasting and throwing occasional counters.

Also on the card, featherweight prospect Tugstsogt Nyambayar (9-0) passed his toughest test to date against fellow undefeated prospect Harmonito Dela Torre (19-1).

At the end of the second round, Dela Torre sent Nyambayar to the canvas just before the bell sounded. Dela Torre kept up the pressure in the third but Nyambayar had already regained the strength in his legs.

Nyambayar started to turn it on in the 5th round and opened a cut over the right eye of Dela Torre. He also started to connect more often and for the first time started to back Dela Torre up. In the 7th he hammered Dela Torre with a vicious combination and the Filipino spit out his mouthpiece to gain additional time to recover.

Nyambayar badly rocked Dela Torre on several occasions but was unable to finish him off. Adelaide Byrd and Max Deluca scored it 78-73 while Dave Moretti had it 79-73.
