Amir Khan (31-3, 19KOs) felt he was within closing distance of a showdown with WBC/WBA welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26KOs).

Khan has been chasing after a Mayweather fight since 2013. He signed on with adviser/manager Al Haymon - believing it would make things easier to get Mayweather in the ring. Even Haymon was unable to convince Mayweather to face Khan.

Mayweather has passed him over on three occasions, and the recent being when he added insult to injury by announced that Andre Berto would be the opponent for September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Berto is one of the Khan's stablemates in the gym, as the two fighters are trained by Virgil Hunter in the Bay Area.

There were certain things that Mayweather had requested from Khan. The British boxer believed he had satisfied those demands, but the fight was never within reach.

"I really thought I was touching distance from the fight. I done everything Floyd asked me to do. He asked me to fight in the 147-pound division. I fought there. I fought guys that came off good wins. I beat Alexander in great style," Khan told Sporting News.

"I thought I improved my position in that fight but he just didn’t want it so obviously I have to go back to the drawing board and see where we go from here. I’ll speak to Al Haymon, who advises me. I thought being with Al Haymon would make it a little easier because we are both advised by the same guy."

Khan is going to return in the fall, likely on a Premier Boxing Champions card in the United States.
