European lightweight champion John Murray has yet to make his fortune - but hopes signing with promoter Frank Warren will change all that.

The Mancunian has revealed that despite the UK's current longest winning record of 30 fights, there were times in the past when he was forced to borrow money from his brother and drive an old banger to training.

But he could hit the jackpot later this year because Warren wants him to fight for a world title.

Murray has his first fight for Warren on Saturday, a defence of his European crown at Bethnal Green's York Hall, against Spain's Karim El Ouazghari.

"I was under financial strain in the past," said the 26-year-old.

"It was very difficult to make money and get by. There were times when I had to borrow money to pay the rent. I remember I twice had to borrow money off my brother Joe, and he was still an amateur!

I would see other fighters driving around in much nicer cars while I would be in my Fiat Punto, but that has made me a much more hungry fighter.

"I don't think I have had the perks yet as a pro fighter, but it has kept me very hungry. But once I get this world title fight the money will come.

"I'm sure Frank will keep me busy get that world title fight and get a big big pay day that I think I deserve."

If he wins that world title he will be in a Rolls Royce!

I honestly believe he can fight for a world title before the end of the year.

"I want him to get the rust out of his system on April 2, and then get him out again quickly. I am delighted he has signed with me. He has done it the hard way, but with a bit of input from me we can get him over the line."
