It was a rough night for Jhonny Gonzalez as he lost his world title to Daniel Ponce De Leon via technical decision. After numerous head clashes, the final one in the 8th round produced a deep gash over Gonzalez’s right eye and forced the ringside doctor to stop the fight. Since it was after 4 rounds, rules state you have to go to the scorecards and De Leon received the nod as all 3 judges had him winning.

Gonzalez spoke to BoxingScene after the fight and informed he wasn’t happy with the judges scoring in the fight.

“We had it in mind that a decision would not go in our favor. They showed me the scores the judges had and I don't feel I was losing the whole fight but they saw it that way. This loss doesn't hurt as much because we already knew we had the judges against us due to Golden Boy being the promoter. We had to knock him out or else we weren't going to win” said Gonzalez.

A second fight between both combatants is almost assured as there was a rematch clause in place and Gonzalez definitely plans to exercise it; but he doesn’t want the fight in Las Vegas or the United States period.

“Right now we are going to rest and recover from this cut and let it heal. I think for next year the rematch is secure but in Mexico City where the judges will be neutral and don't favor a fighter” Gonzalez would tell BoxingScene.

Gonzalez plans to take an interim fight before facing De Leon again next year in hopes of regaining his title.
