Home Depot Center, Carson, California - Jessie Vargas (22-0, 9KOs) kept his undefeated record intact as he overcame an early surge from Wale “Lucky Boy” Omotoso (23-1-1 19KOs) and won a hard fought unanimous decision with scores of 97-92 and 96-93 twice in the opening bout of the HBO telecast.

Both undefeated Welterweights provided good action early on as they fought like they had something to prove. Solid exchanges between both fighters drew cheers from the crowd as Omotoso appeared to be the stronger of the two. A right hand to the body by Omotoso in an exchange in the 2nd round put Vargas down as his knee touched the canvas.

Omotoso seemed in control of the fight until the 5th round where Vargas completely turned things around.  Vargas landed a hard right hand that hurt Omotoso. Seeing his opponent wounded, Vargas jumped on him and unloaded everything he could as he ripped him with punches both upstairs and down. Omotoso barely survived the round.

The fight took a serious decline after such an exciting round as the action slowed. The fight fought in the middle of the ring as the jab was the weapon of choice for both with exchanges now happening less often than before. Things would heat up one last time in the 8th as both let their hands go as the crowd was once again reeled back into the fight.

After 10 hard rounds, Jessie Vargas was awarded a comfortable decision and recorded the 22nd victory of his career.
