Welterweight contender Jessie Vargas (18-0, 9KOs) is looking to make a big statement on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, when he appears on the HBO pay-per-view undercard to Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Miguel Cotto. Vargas has been rising in the ranks and wants to fight the biggest names at welterweight. His career is handled by Mayweather's promotional company, which helps him secure lucrative positions on Floyd's pay-per-view undercards. Vargas wants to use his next fight, against the very experienced Alfonso Gomez, to showcase his skills to the large viewing audience.

"Every time I step into the ring, I not only look at it as another opportunity to perform and showcase my skills, but to prove myself and gain more experience inside the ring. I know that “Ring Kings: Mayweather vs. Cotto” is the biggest fight of the year and I’m excited to be featured on the pay-per-view undercard.  This is the second time I have fought on HBO Pay-Per-View®, which is something that some fighters never get to do in their careers, so I am not taking it for granted. I am ready to show the world what I’m about and what I have to offer," Vargas said.

"It isn’t easy to get to the position that I’m at in my career, and I still have a lot of work to do in order to take my skills to the next level. I understand that there is a lot of competition in the boxing world and that it’s hard for some fighters to even get a fight at any level, it definitely makes me realize how fortune I am and pushes me to work even harder.  In addition, I have the opportunity to train with Floyd Mayweather and see how hard he works every time he steps into the gym.  He is hands-down the best boxer of this era and I am so fortunate to be able to work with him, be a part of Mayweather Promotions and have a great team in my corner. I will make sure I make the most out of every opportunity that is presented to me."

"After my win against Lanardo Tyner in February, I feel more confident than ever and I am ready to add Alfonso Gomez to my list of victories. I know that Gomez is an aggressive power-punching fighter, but I’m more skilled. I’m looking forward to May 5 and making my family and my team proud of me and giving the fans a great show."
