More middleweights were in action as 2008 Venezuelan Olympian Alfonso Blanco (3-0, 2KOs) took on the winless Pablo Ruiz (0-3, OKOs) in a four round bout. Blanco stared off slow but put Ruiz down with a hard body shot. Ruiz would get up and Blanco would continue to work the body and putting down Ruiz for a second time. Wincing in pain, Ruiz was game enough to get up but Blanco once again landed a flush right to the body that put a hault to the bout in the first round.
James Kirkland and Daniel Jacobs did a good job of spoiling the crowd as Jason Montgomery (2-2, O KOs) and Cleven Ishe (2-0, 1 KO) had a hard time following up their impressive knockouts in a four round Middleweight bout. Both guys threw their share of leather but it was a sloppy showing as both fighters winged punches and looked off balance. They both took turns landing flush shots but they seemed to have little effect. In the four round, things heated up when Ishe was finally able to drop Montgomery with a right cross. Montgomery made it out the round but was on wobbly legs and went on to lose by unanimous decision with scores of 39-36 across the board.
Former Michigan State linebacker turned professional heavyweight boxer, Seth Mitchell (21-0, 10KOs), made easy work of his opponent Charles Davis (19-22-3, 4KOs) as he dropped him 4 times in route to a TKO victory. Mitchell started out strong dropping Davis in the first round but it was only the beginning. In the second round, Mitchell put down Davis three times with some strong right hands while mixing in some body attacks. The final knockdown came from a short right cross as Davis’ corner threw in the towel and gave Mitchell is 21st win.
Daniel Jacobs (22-1, 19KOs) entertained the crowd as he took on Robert “Sweet Dreams” Kliewer (11-13-2, 5KOs) in a 10 round super middleweight bout. Kliewer lived up to his nickname but it was he who was sent to dream land as Jacobs knocked him out cold in the first round. Both fighters exchanged right hands but Jacobs did the most damage as it made Kliewer crumble to the canvas. He would beat the count but Jacobs immediately began landing some hard body shots and mixing his attack. Moments later, Jacobs landed a second thunderous right hand that dropped Kliewer for good and forced the ref to call the fight. Freddie Roach was in Daniel Jacob’s corner and already seemed to make a difference. While Jacob’s opponent was limited, Jacobs still looked good mixing his attack.
Undefeated junior middleweight James Kirkland (26-0, 22KOs) made his highly anticipated return to the ring after serving a several months of a prison sentence for violating his parole in 2009. Kirkland hardly broke a sweat as he disposed of Ashandi Gibbs (10-3, 4KOs) in a mere 34 seconds. James wasted no time as he jumped on his opponent as soon as the bell rang. Gibbs tried to exchange with Kirkland but caught a flush left hook that put him down on the canvas and would not get up. Kirkland was visibly pumped for the fight and looked happy to be back in the ring doing what he does best.
