Last Friday night, August the 14th, long-time WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck (38-3-1, 26 KOs) was on the verge of surpassing one of the division’s most prestigious records. However, instead of surpassing Johnny Nelson’s streak of 13 consecutive title defenses, the long-time champion suffered a shocking knockout defeat in eleven rounds to previously undefeated but also untested Polish mandatory contender Krzysztof Glowacki (25-0, 16 KOs).

This was the first time Huck fought on his own, without his life-long promoter Sauerland Events and without his famed coach Ulli Wegner. Alexander Pavlov of Sportbox.ru talked to Wegner to get his thoughts on the reasons for his former protégé’s loss.

“I have already stated before the fight that it could happen”, said Wegner, who has honed and developed a great share of titleholders and many in the Sauerland stable. “Particularly, I said the same thing to Sky Sports, where I have commented on this fight. Marco was under colossal pressure. Even though he got older and wiser… frankly, I don’t think [he did]. But he had an enormously difficult task in front of him."

"In principle, Marco faces these types of problems - these are intrinsic, psychological problems. Regarding other aspects [of what went wrong], I cannot say anything because I wasn’t in his camp. But I know what has happened. The pressure was almost unbearable, and someone should have taken care of this issue. It appears there was nobody to do this in his new team”.
