As previously reported, former champion Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero (29-1-1, 18KOs), along with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (39-0, 29Kos), are the two frontrunners to face WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) on May 5th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In a recent article by BoxingScene's Ronnie Nathanielsz, Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum criticized a possible fight between Mayweather and Guerrero. Arum doesn't expect the fight to generate much business.

BoxingScene.com: Robert, Bob Arum has spoken out against your potential fight with Floyd Mayweather.  He’s saying the fight will fail.  What are your thoughts on his comments?

RG:  Do you really thing Bob Arum is going to come out and say anything Mayweather and Golden Boy does is going to be a success.  Golden Boy and Top Rank are like the republicans and the democrats; they’re never going to give up their game plans.  Bob Arum is down playing a Mayweather-Guerrero fight because deep down he knows this fight will be a massive success.  Just like in politics, he’s going to say the exact opposite.

BoxingScene.com: So you’re saying his comments are a ploy to destroy the fight before it happens?

RG:  Yeah, because when the masses see my accomplishments inside and outside the ring, they’re going to rally behind me and this fight will be a box office hit.  Once they see that I’m a multiple world champion who is undefeated in world title fights, they’ll know that this fight is a danger to Floyd.   Bob Arum knows this fight will be pay-per-view conquest when the general public hears about my accomplishments in the ring and my personal story on 24/7, about my family struggles and how we overcame adversity together.   That’s why he’s a great business man.  No doubt my story is the perfect storm for a great pay-per-view event and the story will resonate with every ethnicity.  The difference between a great pay-per-view and an Ok pay-per-view, is selling to the general public.  And Bob Arum knows that, and that’s why he’s doing everything he can to stop it.

BoxingScene.com: Do you believe the story line could really be the ultimate good guy vs. bad guy theme?

RG:  One thing we know for sure, nothing is better in sports then a David and Goliath state of affairs. With Floyd “Money” Mayweather’s bravado and flamboyant lifestyle and my humble, blue-collar approach, you can’t ask for more contrasting styles of life.

BoxingScene.com: You will be an underdog going into a fight with Mayweather.  How do you feel that plays into the promotion?

RG:  Who doesn’t want to see the underdog win the super bowl?  America always roots for the underdog.  The fact is, although I’m perceived as the underdog, I’m one of the most accomplished fighters in boxing.  Not many fighters can say they are a multiple division world champion and have gone overseas to capture a belt.  I’ve been blessed to do it all.  It’s my time shine and Bob Arum doesn’t want to see Golden Boy have the next superstar in boxing.
