Indio, Calif.
--Pablo Cesar Cano survived a major scare from Juan Carlos Abreu to take a majority decision in their 10-round welterweight bout Friday evening at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.
Scores were 80-72 across the board in favor of de la Hoya (9-0, 6KOs), who perhaps won every round but was forced to work hard throughout the contest. The fight was a huge step up in class for the unbeaten super bantamweight prospect, whose older cousin is famous Hall of Famer former fighter-turned-active-promoter Oscar de la Hoya.
Roman (17-4-3, 6KOs) has now lost two straight. The Mexican boxer was coming off of a two-round knockout loss to unbeaten 122 lb. titlist Leo Santa Cruz last September.
Super-sized heavyweight Taishan Dong opened up the Fox Sports 1 telecast with a four-round decision over Roy McCrary. Scores were 40-34 (twice) and 39-35 in favor of the 7'0" Taishan (3-0, 2KOs), who dropped McCrary in round three but was still given a bit of a fight the rest of the way.
