Former three division champion Erik Morales has next fight already planned out. Morales returns on September 17th in a fight with Lucas Matthysse for the vacant WBC junior welterweight title. if Morales wins the WBC crown, his name has been mentioned as a possible opponent for WBA/IBF champion Amir Khan in December.

When questioned about a possible fight with Khan, Morales told BoxingScene that he would rather secure a rematch with Marcos Maidana, who won a close twelve round decision when they fought in April. Maidana defends the WBA's "regular" 140-pound title against Robert Guerrero on August 27th.

"I'm going to be rooting for Maidana. He was barking up in the ring that he was going to give me that rematch. The weeks have been passing and I don't see that rematch. Hopefully he wins against Guerrero because I want that rematch," Morales told BoxingScene.com's Ernest Gabion.
