Daniel Echeverria bounced back strong from the lone loss of his career, though he wound up trading knockdowns en route to stopping Abner Lopez in eight rounds Saturday evening in Tlalnepantla, México.

Lopez actually enjoyed the greater momentum heading into the battle of Mexican welterweights, having won four straight including an upset win over previously unbeaten Aik Shakhnazaryan earlier this year. Yet it was the Tijuana-based welterweight who hit the deck first, with Echeverria catching him off guard in the opening round.

The favor was returned in round three, when Lopez came storming back to drop Echeverria less than a minute into the frame. Echeverria was still in recovery mode when a low blow (unintentional or otherwise) bought him some additional time. Lopez cleaned up the rest of the round, but was unable to produce the necessary sustained attack to close the show.

With that came Echeverria's storm back into the fight. Lopez was forced to contend with a rallying opponent as well as a cut over his right eye. There was plenty of two-way action, but slowly giving ground to Echeverria as the rounds wore on.

A left hand upstairs followed by a right hook to the temple had Lopez down again in round eight. Echeverria went on the attack, landing at will until the referee intervened.

Echeverria advances to 19-1 (17KOs), overcoming a surprise majority decision loss to Jorge Paez Jr. earlier this year.

Lopez snaps a four-fight win streak as he falls to 23-5 (19KOs).

The bout aired live on TV Azteca in Mexico and beIN Sport Español in the United States.
