Aside from the several major cards during this rich boxing weekend, involving a number of high-profile competitors, there were several local shows in Europe the last couple of days. Also two Russian fighters made modest waves across the Atlantics, scoring easy kayos against non-descript opposition.

WBA #10 lightweight Edis Tatli (22-0, 6 KOs), a slippery Finnish technician (originally from Kosovo) with solid skills and profound technique, added the soundest name to date to his ever-growing resume tonight at Barona Arena in Espoo, Finland. Tatli got the better of former two-time IBF super featherweight champion Mzonke Fana (32-7, 13 KOs) over twelve rounds to retain his WBA I/C title and to improve his position within the WBA ranks.

The 26-year old fighter showed a much better footwork than his 40-year old opponent. Still Fana was dangerous. He has experienced a roller coaster this year, starting it with a stoppage loss to Paulus Moses in Namibia, then outpointing ex-IBF super bantamweight Takalani Ndlovu in September. But tonight he wasn’t on even terms with a younger guy. Tatli moved well, slipped Fana’s punches easily, showing sophisticated defense and fluid offence. At the end, all three judges had it unanimously for the Finnish fighter: 118-110 (twice) and 117-111.

In a co-main event, Lithuanian import Virgilijus Stapiulonis (22-2, 15 KOs) proved his August win over local prospect (21-0 at the time) Niko Jokinen was no fluke. This time the Lithuanian middleweight, who was misjudged in Montenegro against Predrag Radosevic the last year, stopped Jokinen (21-2, 7 KOs) in three rounds of action.

Welterweight Jussi Koivula (15-1, 4 KOs) looked dominant in a clear sweep against Netherlander Hassan Ait Bassou (14-6, 8 KOs). Scores were 100-90 on all three judges’ scorecards.

Sexy lightweight Eva Wahlstrom (9-0-1, 3 KOs) also proved to be a good boxer, outpointing Polish import Anna Sikora (3-3, 1 KO) over six: 60-54, 60-55 and 59-56.

Other fights:

Eemeli Katajisto (7-0, 3 KOs) UD 6 Kevin Thomas Cojean (10-4-1, 3 KOs). Scores: 60-54 (x2) and 60-55

Niklas Rasanen (2-0, 1 KO) TKO 3 Norbert Olek (0-1)

P3 Boxing, led by Pekka Maki, promoted the event.

In Germany, a familiar heavyweight performer and a couple of local female stars were back into the ring on the Friday night of boxing at Brandenburg Halle in Frankfurt.

Ex-world title challenger Francesco Pianeta moved to 29-1, with 16 KOs, after an easy second round stoppage of previously undefeated and totally untested Robert Teuber (8-1, 7 KOs) in a bid for a vacant German International heavyweight belt. Pianeta overwhelmed his opponent to the point Teuber was in no position to continue and then saved by his own corner at 1:43. Pianeta was fighting for the first time since his painful kayo defeat to Wladimir Klitschko in May.

It took WBO and WBF female middleweight champion Christina Hammer (16-0, 8 KOs) just 102 seconds to get the rid of the 19-year old Mexican Carmen Garcia (10-3, 5 KOs), making her third successful defense this year. 5’11’’ Hammer, 23, has scored her first stoppage win since February 2011.

In another multi-title female collision, German WIBF, WBF and WBO super featherweight titlist Ramona Kuehne (21-1, 7 KOs) stopped Hungarian import Renata Domsoedi (11-4, 5 KOs) in six rounds. Kuehne, 33, stopped Domsoedi in eight rounds almost two years ago in their first fight. She was also a world titleholder at lightweight and at light welterweight (although an interim version) limits earlier in her career.

Comebacking Kai Kurzawa, now 37, a well-known personality in German boxing, got his fourth win over the last four months with a convincing unanimous decision over Marcel Gottschalk (9-6-2, 7 KOs). Gottschalk, who was outboxed by scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 98-92, is the toughest opponent for Kurzawa this year. The veteran fight acquired a vacant German International cruiserweight title and moved up to 32-4, with 23 KOs.

Unbeaten heavyweight Michael Wallisch (11-0, 7 KOs) successfully defended his German (BDB) title, outpointing ex-cruiserweight Lars Buchholz (24-7, 17 KOs) in ten rounds. Official scores were: 100-90, 98-92 and 97-93 – for the champion, who is best known for removing zero in “L” column of the previously undefeated 27-0 Yakup Saglam in April 2011.

Other results:

Felix Lamm (7-1, 3 KO) UD 6 Jegenijs Fedorovs (9-43-6, 4 KOs). Scores: 60-54 (x3)

Tom Schwarz (3-0, 2 KOs) UD 4 Edgars Kalnars (24-27, 18 KOs). Scores: 40-36 (x3)

Polish light heavyweight Pawel Glazewski (21-2, 5 KOs) kicked off his comeback road, following an upset loss to Frenchman Hadillah Mohoumadi in June with a workmanlike eight-round unanimous decision over Belarussian import Andrey Salakhutdinov (15-3, 5 KOs). The fight crowned a small but nice-packed night of boxing in Bialobrzegi, Poland, promoted by Marcin Piwek of Fight Events. Scores were: 80-72 and 79-73 (x2) - for Glazewski.

Super middleweight Andrzej Soldra (9-0-1, 5 KOs) scored an important career-boosting win over Italian veteran Lorenzo Di Giacomo (41-9-1, 19 KOs). After a solid beginning Di Giacomo faded under punishing power of Soldra and finally failed to answer the bell for round five. The Italian was stopped just for the second time in his career.

Lightweight Krzysztof Cieslak (21-5, 6 KOs) was lucky to be awarded the eight-round split decision over Frenchman Sebastian Cornu (13-10-3, 6 KOs). Scores were: 77-75, 75-77 and 78-75.

Other results:

Krzysztof Szot (18-9-1, 5 KOs) UD 4 Alexander Abramenko (17-40-1, 6 KOs)

Piotr Gudel (1-1) UD 4 Artiom Pavinich (1-2-1)

Marin Ficner (1-0) UD 4 Mariusz Czerniawski (0-1)

Remigiusz Smolinski (1-0) UD 4 Vladimir Pakanik (0-1)

WBC #4, IBF #7 and WBO #12 super middleweight Maxim Vlasov (28-1, 14 KOs), who was sidelined during the first half of this year, continued his road back in Costa Mesa, CF, on Thursday night by stopping veteran Maxell Taylor (18-6-1, 8 KOs) in the fourth round. Taylor was finished with a hard right hand. Team Vlasov looks to more fights in the near future.

A day after, Russian lightweight Rustam Nugaev (26-6-1, 16 KOs) showed his damaging power, while fighting at Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, CF, by finishing off incapable Mario Hermosillo (12-13-3, 2 KOs) at 2:02 of the very first round.

WBA #3, WBC #6 and IBF #10 Nugaev, nicknamed Mangust, is 31 now. He missed 21 months for various reasons between July 2011 and April 2013. However, since coming back Nugaev was a freight train scoring four knockouts in the same number of fights this year.
