The odds alone are enough to remind Mark De Mori of the uphill challenge he faces this weekend.

A variety of sportsbooks all list unbeaten heavyweight contender Filip Hrgovic as a 50-1betting favorite to prevail in their scheduled ten-round bout this Saturday at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The most modest line has Australia’s De Mori as a 14-1 underdog, and upwards of 20-1 to shock the world.

None of this is lost on the 41-year-old fringe contender, who was direct with his planned approach.

“The plan is simple,” De Mori stated during the final pre-fight press conference. “I know I’m not going to win this on points. I’m going to start in fourth gear.

“All the pressure is on him. I’m gonna try to break him in half. Live by the sword, die by the sword.”

Croatia’s Hrgovic (16-0, 13KOs) is the current IBF mandatory challenger. A decision to remain active has seen the 2016 Olympic Bronze medalist face and beat Australia’s Demsey McKean via 12th round stoppage in August and now lined up to meet an even greater longshot Aussie.

De Mori (41-2-2, 36KOs) comes in with a glossy record but which is extremely thin on credentials.

An eleven-fight win streak precedes this weekend’s affair, but he hasn’t even beaten a fighter who came off a win since 2014 and has zero notable conquests in his near 20-year-career. He was stopped in the first round of both career defeats, including a 131-second blitzing at the hands of a comebacking David Haye in 2016.

De Mori went the eight-round distance in his most recent outing in September but doesn’t envision this bout making its way to the judges.

“It’s a ten-round scheduled fight. I have absolutely no desire to go ten rounds,” insisted De Mori. “I have the arms of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. I’m not going to outjab him. I’m gonna get in close and try to break him in half. That’s the only way it’s going to happen and that’s the way I’m going to try.

“That’s the only chance I have. I’m not here to go rounds. I’m not here to do my best. I’m here to try to break him in half. If he knocks me out, good luck to him in his career."

Hrgovic-De Mori is part of an eight-fight event that will air live on Pay-Per-View in the United Kingdom beginning at 4:00 pm. ET and in the U.S. beginning at 11:00 a.m. ET/8:00 a.m. PT.
