Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is very happy for Shawn Porter (26-1-1, 16KOs), who this past Saturday night won a twelve round unanimous decision over Adrien Broner at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

De La Hoya's company promoted Porter (and Broner too) for several years. Porter left their banner as part of the severed business relationship between Golden Boy and manager/adviser Al Haymon.

Because of Broner's controversial antics, De La Hoya was never exactly a big fan of the boxer.

"I was very happy for Porter. I was extremely happy for Porter, because first of all they make him drain himself down a few pounds. Obviously he was the B-side going into the fight. I was very happy that he got the victory," De La Hoya told BoxingScene.com.

Porter would like to get in the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Mayweather has already rejected that opportunity.

Marcos Maidana handed Broner the first defeat of his pro career. Based on the strength of that win, Maidana was able to secure an opportunity against Mayweather (twice) in 2014.

Using the same logic, De La Hoya believes Porter has done enough to earn a Mayweather opportunity - and certainly more than the two candidates being mentioned by the pound-for-pound king - Andre Berto and Karim Mayfield.

"If I was Porter's promoter, I would get him the Mayweather fight. He deserves the Mayweather fight. And he would fight him at 147-pounds and not the way he fought Broner at 144, so I think Porter is a guy who deserves it. If Maidana beat Broner and he got a shot at Mayweather...well Porter beat Broner so he should get a shot at Mayweather," De La Hoya said.
