Shimazu Arena, Kyoto, Japan - Danny Roman (23-2-1, 9 KOs) came into enemy territory and became a world champion, when he picked up a ninth round stoppage of previously undefeated Shun Kubo (12-1, 9 KOs) to capture the WBA "regular" super bantamweight title.

Roman had Kubo down twice in the contest and battered him before the contest was waved off.

Roman made good on a promise to bring the gold back home to the United States. He secured the shot with a vicious beat down of Adam Lopez for a stoppage win, also in nine, in a final eliminator which took place back January in a Showtime televised bout.

Kubo was making his first defense of the title he had captured back in April. He stopped longtime division veteran Nehomar Cermeno in ten rounds to win the title at the Edion Arena in Osaka, Japan.

The current ruler of the division, under the WBA, is the sanctioning organization's "super" champion at the weight - Guillermo Rigondeaux.

At some point, Roman will be ordered to face Rigondeaux, but the talented Cuban boxer is already under an order to make a mandatory defense against Moises Flores, who was the WBA's interim-champion at 122-pounds.

Back in June in Las Vegas, Rigondeaux stopped Flores in one round. The knockout victory was later reversed to a no-decision, after the Nevada State Athletic Commission had concluded that Rigondeaux's knockout blow had come after the first bell.

The WBA would then order Rigondeaux and Flores to have a rematch. And Roman will eventually have to face the winner of that contest - which most expect to be Rigondeaux.
