UNIONDALE, New York – George Sosa jumped up and down Saturday night, sure he had done enough to beat the house fighter.

Sosa settled for a majority draw with Long Island’s Tommy Rainone in their non-televised, six-round junior middleweight match on the Daniel Jacobs-Luis Arias undercard at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. One judge scored the fight for Sosa, 59-55, but the other two judges had it even (57-57).

Sosa (15-10-1, 15 KOs), of Passaic, New Jersey, seemed to land the harder shots during the fight. The left-handed Rainone (26-8-2, 6 KOs) mostly moved away from the stronger Sosa, but neither fighter was badly hurt.

Earlier Saturday night, Long Island’s Tyrone James defeated Daniel Sostre by unanimous decision in a six-round junior middleweight match. James (6-0, 3 KOs) beat Sostre (12-15-1, 5 KOs) by the same score, 60-53, on all three scorecards.

Before James’ victory, Kazakh junior welterweight Dimash Niyazov remained unbeaten by stopping Agustine Mauras in the fifth round of a scheduled six-rounder.

Niyazov improved to 13-0-3 and recorded his sixth knockout. Mauras, of Lawrence, Massachusetts, lost by knockout for first time (6-4-3, 3 KOs).

In the first bout of the nine-fight card, Uzbekistan’s Shohjahon Ergashev kept his perfect knockout record intact by stopping Marquis Hawthorne in the second round of a welterweight bout scheduled for six rounds.

Ergashev, a southpaw who resides in Brooklyn, has won each his 10 professional fights by knockout. Hawthorne (5-8, 1 KO), of Waco, Texas, has lost six of his last eight fights.
