Paul Economides will return to the ring in the spring after signing a new managerial deal.

The Connahs Quay super bantamweight, 29, has been out of the ring since last October and is now preparing to lace up the gloves again.

Economides, who is originally from Chester, is now having his career guided by Dave Coldwell and the Rotherham-based former promoter has moved swiftly to secure his newest charge a date.

‘Spartan’ will look to add to his record of 18-5 (4 KOs) when he fights over six rounds on the undercard of ‘Danger Zone’ at the Manchester Arena.

“The link up [with Dave Coldwell] has been going on a while now,” he told Boxing Scene.

“I’ve been going up there [to Coldwell’s gym] and sparring [WBA bantamweight champion] Jamie and [WBC Silver super bantamweight titlist] Gavin [McDonnell], but I wasn’t getting any fights.”

Economides held licences with the Malta Boxing Commission and the German Boxing Association and was dismayed at the lack of ring action being offered to him.

“I told Dave about me not getting any fights with the Malta board that I was with, or the German board, and he said: ‘Why don’t you come back to the British [Boxing] Board [of Control] and I’ll sign you up?’

“So I applied for my licence, was granted it and Dave has got me on a big show already, so I can’t complain.”

His return will come as part of the Eddie Hearn-promoted show, on May 7, which is live on Sky Sports and topped by Anthony Crolla as he looks to retain his WBA lightweight crown against Venezuelan mandatory challenger Ismael Barroso.

“It feels like my debut again,” Economides continued. “I’ve got butterflies already. For me to be boxing on such a big show, with a world title headliner, after only just getting back into it is great.

“I never usually get nervous until fight week, but the nerves are here now and it’s all real now that the announcement has been made about me getting back in the ring and that the tickets have arrived.

“I’m really excited and I can’t wait.”
