Gary Cornish walked out to the sounds of 'Can't Stop' used by Wladimir Klitschko but that’s where the similarity ended after being demolished in 90 seconds by heavyweight hope Anthony Joshua at London’s O2 Arena tonight.

Joshua, who becomes Commonwealth heavyweight champion in the process, was caught with a left hand in the opening exchanges but that was where Cornish’s artillery died after the speed and power of the Londoner’s right hand put the Scot down not long after.

Cornish fought with great courage but little defence thus allowing Joshua to tee off with another bomb which put Cornish down again. Brave attempts to hold on wasn’t enough for referee Victor Loughlin who waved the fight off after Cornish tried to climb to his feet once again.

Joshua, who now moves to 14-0 (14 KOs) and takes Cornish’s unbeaten record in the process 21-1 (12 KOs), will go on to December 12 for the much anticipated dust-up between old amateur foe Dillian Whyte for the Commonwealth and (vacant) British titles.

It was a disappointing main event which saw the ring walks last considerably longer than the fight itself.

Speaking afterwards, Joshua said: “Credit to Gary, big man and solid jab. I wasn’t trying to dish it out all out in the first round. I managed a right hand which had a perfect connection. If you start taking your time it could be me on the receiving end of those blows."

And of his December date with Whyte, he added: “I’m just glad he got the W (tonight). He wanted a bit more time but December 12, date’s set. It’s so relevant (the amateur defeat to Whyte) and it’s my chance to even the score. We’ll be back at the O2 to dust up again.”

Whyte said: “It was a good performance. I said he’d knock him out in the first round and that’s what he did. I’m scared of nobody, every heavyweight has power. Mike Tyson had power and he still lost. I’ll come back here and knock him out.”
