Last Saturday, Miguel Angel Cotto defeated the Tijuana's Antonio Margarito at Madison Square Garden in New York City, setting the stage for a 2012 battle with WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Two weeks before Cotto made his defense, Jr. retained his title by stopping Peter Manfredo Jr. at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas, and he was just waiting the winner of the bout between Cotto and Margarito to choose his next rival.

Although Chavez supported Margarito for being a Mexican boxer, his wish was to face Cotto, and so it will be, probably by April 2012, in what it may be another epic battle between Mexico and Puerto Rico.

“I was supporting Tony due to the fact that he’s a Mexican boxer, but at the same time I didn’t want to face him because I’m Mexican too. I always said that I want to fight Cotto and I say it again, I hope to fight him next year” said Chavez, who attended the bout in New York.

With a professional record of 44 wins 31 KO’s 1 draw and undefeated in eight years of boxing career, the son of Julio Cesar Chavez, will face his first bout against a Puerto Rican boxer, an old rivalry in boxing, if a deal is reached to fight Cotto.
