It was billed as 50-50, it was billed as 60-40… in the end the result was emphatic as Callum Smith obliterated Rocky Fielding in one round to win the vacant British super middleweight title.

In front of a 10,000 sold-out Echo Arena in both fighter’s home city of Liverpool, it looked positive for Fielding with his jab in the opening seconds rocking Smith’s head back.

It wasn’t long before Callum Smith’s offence took over and did so with devastating effect. A left and right to the head followed by a body shot dropped Fielding to the floor. The attack was swift, wicked and Smith was thirsty for more as ‘Rocky from Stocky’ rose to his feet.

Fielding, noted for his power, wasn’t prepared to cover up and see the round out. Each man grinned at one another as they tasted leather. Long ranging straight shots pushed Smith back and seemed to hurt the WBC Silver belt holder momentarily before a quick, whipping left hand crash landed on Fielding’s head and dropped him for a second time.

The end was nigh, Fielding unsteady but not overly hurt, Smith (18-0, 13KOs) smelling blood and the chance to make an even bigger statement went to work on his fellow Liverpudlian and a ruthless onslaught began with a punishing right hand followed by punch after punch that saw Fielding (21-1, 12KOs) drop to the floor just as Smith was crossing T’s and dotting I’s with a couple of body shots.

With 14 seconds left in the round, referee Phil Edwards had seen enough and waved off a contest that proved to be something of a demolition job by Callum Smith who becomes the fourth Smith brother to claim a Lonsdale belt and create history in doing so. A feat never been done and one that will likely never be seen again.

Speaking to Sky Sports’ Ed Robinson after the fight, the new British super middleweight champion said: “It felt exciting while it lasted. It was a shoot-out. I’m pleased to get the win. It’s a one-round blowout on paper but it’s a good win. I’d be lying if I said I thought I take him out in the first round. I was a bit reckless but I didn’t expect to get him out there in one round, it went into a bit of a shoot-out.

“It’s his (Fielding) first loss.I’m not being big headed but he’s lost to a good fighter. He can go away, work hard and come back.”

And of his and his family’s achievements: “It was a big achievement. A great achievement for the family. No reason why this is the end. We can go on and win more world titles like (Liam, WBO light middleweight champion) has).”

Smith’s trainer, Joe Gallagher said: “It was great that both kids were willing to put it on the line. The future, at the moment, is Callum Smith. Liverpool should be so proud of the Smith brothers. Enjoy the moment.”

Promoter to both fighters, Eddie Hearn was proud of Smith and Fielding for stepping up and facing each other at this stage in their career and commended their conduct throughout the build-up.

“They just went at it,” was how Hearn reacted to the fight. “This guy’s (Smith) got freakish power. He’s WBC number one. I believe Callum Smith will win world championships in 2016. This is big times for Callum Smith in the world division.”

Speaking backstage, a disappointed Fielding gave his assessment on the fight.

“I’m gutted. Hats off to Callum, he’s a good fighter. One punch changed the game. He caught me but I wasn’t knocked out or hurt. With me and him it was who landed first. He got me first. He can push on but I’ll be back and push on more.”
