Matchroom Boxing has pledged funds to the family of Mike Towell.

The Dundee welterweight died on Friday (September 30), aged 25, as a result of injuries suffered the previous night in a defeat to Dale Evans in Glasgow.

Towell took on the Welshman in an eliminator for the British welterweight title, currently held by Penge’s Bradley Skeete, at the Radisson Blu Hotel.

After being stopped in round five, with referee Victor Loughlin intervening, Towell collapsed and was led from the ring on a stretcher.

He was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma and subsequently on life support.

His life support machine was switched off but Towell, a fighter until the end, continued his battle until being pronounced dead at 11:02pm.

Ricky Hatton, the former world champion, and ex-British super-welterweight title challenger Kris Carslaw, on behalf of the St Andrews Sporting Club, who promoted Towell, have each opened fundraising pages to support his family financially during their grief.

At the time of writing, both pages had amassed a collective total of £41,343, with donations coming in by the hour.

And now Eddie Hearn, the Matchroom chief, has announced that all proceeds from tickets sold for Ricky Burns’ October 7 mandatory WBA super-lightweight title defence against Kiryl Relikh, between midnight on Wednesday (October 5) and midnight on Thursday (October 6), would go to Mike’s family.

Ricky Burns vs. Kiryl Relikh for the WBA super-lightweight world title on Friday, October 7 at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow is live on Sky Sports 2 from 8pm.
