An unofficial four-man super flyweight
tournament helps kick off the summer season of Boxeo Telemundo, with the results of the two bouts shaping up its
fall season as well.
The series returns to
Telemundo for its summer season, with a block of four consecutive Friday night
broadcasts kicking off July 18 in Kissimmee, Florida. Headlining the show,
Puerto Rico’s Jonathan Vidal hopes to end a two-fight skid, as he faces Mexico’s
Juan Kantun in a scheduled 10-round super flyweight regional title fight.
Vidal (17-2, 9KO) made his
Telemundo this past March, following the first loss of his career last summer.
The 24-year old was unable to rediscover his winning ways, dropping a
competitive 10-round decision to Antonio Garcia in Tampa, Florida.
Both of his career losses
have coincided with his lone two bouts outside of his native Puerto Rico.
Fighting at the Kissimmee Civic Center, Vidal figures to be the crowd favorite.
Kantun (21-6-3, 15KO)
fights for the first time in the United States, and just his second career bout
outside of Mexico. His most recent performance was a 7th round
knockout loss to unbeaten lower-weight star Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez this
past February.
One week later, series
favorite David Carmona headlines in Mexico City, facing countryman Martin
Casillas. The 10-round bout takes place at Foro Polanco, where Carmona (16-2-1,
8KO) has been a regular since turning pro in 2009.
The bout marks the first
piece of ring action for the 24-year old since suffering a 7th round
knockout loss to long-reigning super flyweight champ Omar Narvaez last
December.
Casillas (14-3, 8KO) is
coming off of a 10-round points loss to unbeaten Nikolay Potapov this past
April in Russia, his first outside of Mexico
Assuming the winners of the
aforementioned bouts escape unscathed, a head-on collision is planned for later
this year.
“We start the summer series
with two very competitive super flyweight fights; the winners will meet on our
fall series,” confirmed All-Star Boxing President Felix ‘Tuto’ Zabala Jr. “From
there, a possible world title shot in 2015.”
Headlining bouts for the August 1 and August 8 shows
have yet to be announced. The August 1 show takes place at the A La Carte
Pavilion in Tampa, Florida, before returning to Foro Polanco in Mexico City one
week later.
