Earlier this month WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt (36-1) was in Las Vegas to watch the Tyson Fury-Otto Wallin heavyweight fight. Top Rank also formally announced his November 2nd fight against Jason Sosa (23-3-4) that will take place in Southern California.

The 27-year-old Berchelt will be attempting to defend his title for the 6th time.

Sosa is a former world champion who was born in Camden, New Jersey. He has had several questionable decisions go against him in his career and Berchelt expects a tough fight.

“He’s a great fighter. I have a lot of respect for him. He’s an ex-champion like you mentioned. He’s faced a lot of great fighters like (Javier) Fortuna and (Vasiliy) Lomachenko and now he will fight with Miguel Berchelt. He’s a great fighter and I know he’s coming to try to take this title from me but I am going to come into he ring with the same desire to retain my title,” Berchelt told BoxingScene.com.

Berchelt is also excited about being part of the storied México-Puerto Rico rivalry in boxing. Sosa is of Puerto Rican descent while Berchelt was born in Cancún, Quintana Roo, México.

“It’s one of the biggest rivalries in boxing. When a Mexican and a Puerto Rican are in the same ring you know you are guaranteed a great fight and November 2nd won’t be the exception,” said Berchelt.

There have been several big fights in the history of the rivalry including Salvador Sánchez versus Wilfredo Gómez and more recently Miguel Cotto’s pair of fights against Antonio Margarito and his fight against Canelo Alvarez to name just a few.

When asked about his favorite fight in the rivalry, Berchelt mentioned a big fight from the early 90’s that took place a couple months shy of his 1st birthday.

“Well for me it is Julio César Chávez versus Héctor “Macho” Camacho. I think it is one of the biggest fights in the rivalry of Mexico and Puerto Rico. I love watching that fight,” said Berchelt.
