Former world welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir finished up a strong training camp for his fight on Sept. 18 in Los Angeles against unbeaten Mexico's Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (33-0-1, 25 KOs) of Mexico. He said he was "optimistic and confident" of beating his "novel" rival, barely 20 years old.

Baldomir returned to ring in late November 2009 after having announced his retirement and will fight for the junior middleweight "silver" world title of the World Boxing Council (WBC) that is held by "Canelo" Alvarez.

"I have fought with the best and Alvarez is just a rookie who won all of his fights in Mexico and has only been in the ring with few name fighters. I think he's a good fighter, but he doesn't come close to what I've accomplished," said Baldomir.

The 39-yearpold from Santa Fe will have a tough fight with the Mexican puncher, who at just 20 years has been conducting a successful campaign that shows him as a strong hope for boxing in Mexico.

Baldomir (45-12-6, 14 KOs), in 2006, won the welterweight title by beating Zab Judah.  Then defended it with victory over Arturo Gatti and lost to American boxer Floyd Mayweather.
