BoxingScene.com spoke with Michael Miller, manager and legal counsel, to junior middleweight contender Alfredo Angulo, who advised us that his boxer will see an ophthalmologist on Monday to determine the full extent of the eye injury suffered during the tenth round Saturday's TKO loss to Erislandy Lara at the Home Depot Centre in Carson, California.

At the time of the stoppage, Angulo (22-3, 18 KOs) was closing the gap on the scorecards. He was ahead 86-83 on one, and down 85-84 by the other two judges. He dropped Lara twice, in the fourth and in the ninth, but the fight came to an unexpected end in the tenth when Lara threw a series of punches and one of them broke Angulo's orbital bone near his left eye.

Following the match, Angulo went to Harbor–UCLA Medical Center but no X-ray or MRI was taken. Miller says the scene at the hospital was chaotic with at least 75 to 100 people waiting for emergency treatment. Tired of waiting, Angulo left the facility at 3am.

Angulo believes the injury came from a thumb to the eye, but even Miller is not convinced of that scenario.

"A few people who saw the replay, said it looked like it came from a clean punch. Even the doctor said the patients that he sees, with broken orbitals, feel like they got thumbed in the eye. There is a chance that Alfredo felt what he thought might have been a thumb but it could have been the break in the orbital. I'm just making a guess, I'm not trying to play doctor. I heard from the commission, I heard from the referee [Raul] Caiz, who came up to me and said it was a punch. He said 'I saw it and it was a punch.' We don't want to make a big controversy about it. We don't want to be a poor sport. If it was a fair punch then it was a fair punch. Let's not throw water on Lara's win," Miller told BoxingScene.com.
