Former world champion Amir Khan (31-4, 19 KOs) is biting at the lip to get back in the ring and showcase his skills.

He snaps a two-year layoff on Saturday night, when he steps in the ring against Phil Lo Greco at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

The contest will be the first for Khan since May 2016, when he moved up to a catch-weight of 155-pounds and suffered a sixth round knockout at the hands of then WBC middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

Khan believes that at 31-years-old he's still at the peak of his career.

After training for several weeks with new coach Joe Goossen, Khan wants to show off a much smarter fighter in the ring.

"I can't wait to get in the ring and see how I am, as a fighter, after two years," Khan told Sky Sports News.

"I think I'm at the peak of my career now. I feel better now than I did when I was 28. I train smarter now. When I was younger I made mistakes - [I was caught with my] hands down. Now I'm smarter, I don't want to be caught with those big shots like the Canelo shot. Canelo, that night, would have knocked out a lot of welterweight fighters. He's a very big puncher."

Khan believes the winner of the upcoming contest with Lo Greco will fall right in line for a world title shot in the near future.

"This fight takes us to the next level, where we want to be. The winner will go to world level," Khan said.

"I really think there is a world title still, for me. The division is amazing - there are a lot of big names. There are fighters I think I can beat. I want to go back down to the 147lbs division, win a world title, then move onto other ways of taking big fights."
