GUADALAJARA, Jalisco - José “Chepo” Reynoso, the manager of WBC junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, likes the idea of having his boxer face former two division champion Ricardo Mayorga in September. Alvarez returned on Saturday in Guadalajara to stop manadatory challenger Ryan Rhodes in the twelfth round. Alvarez's tentative return date is September 17.

"We like Mayorga, [as an opponent because] he can still help Saul learn a lot," Reynoso said.

Alvarez's tentative return falls on the already scheduled date for Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s bout against WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz. Alvarez clears the air, and says there is no possibility that he will appear on the undercard of Mayweather's card. He plans to headline his own show in September, in Los Angeles or Mexico, and possibly his fight will be showcased during the Mayweather-Ortiz pay-per-view broadcast. Alvarez believes his stock in the sport has grown and it would be "a step backwards" to appear in an undercard role on another boxer's event.
