Staples Center, Los Angeles, California - WBC super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13KOs) won a lopsided twelve round unanimous decision over defense specialist Anselmo "Chemito" Moreno (33-2-1, 12KOs). The scores were 116-110, 116-110 and 120-106. Moreno, still the WBA's super champion at bantamweight, was moving up to take the fight.

It was the matador chasing the bull. Mares was hunting down the crafty Moreno, round after round, and trying to land anything possible to the head and the body. He finally caught up with Moreno in the fifth, dropping him near the end after a series of shots to the head and body.

Moreno did well in the sixth, countering off the ropes, but Mares closed stong with a huge right hand. Mares continued to press forward in the eight and ninth, and was willing to take a few punches to land a few - and the few coming from Mares were doing more damage time and time again.

Moreno lost a point in the eleventh for pushing down the head of an incoming Mares. Moreno had received several warning in the prior rounds for similar tactics. In the twelfth, Mares continued to give chase and was looking to close strong, as Moreno was doing more coasting than fighting.
